Murrayfield Stadium

How to get to Murrayfield Stadium

Murrayfield Stadium is named after the part of Edinburgh that it’s located in, an area to the west of the city. If you’re travelling into Edinburgh on the West Coast Mainline, you’ll go right past it as you slow down to stop at Haymarket Station, which will give you an idea of the direction. There are no direct trains to Murrayfield Stadium, but it’s about a half-hour walk from Haymarket Station – there’s a great atmosphere on match day. However, you’ll also be able to jump on a bus, tram or taxi in half the time.

What to do at Murrayfield Stadium

If you’re visiting Murrayfield, it’s about 99% likely that you’ll be going to watch the Scottish Rugby Union team play, whether you’re a home or away supporter. However, you might also be watching a Pro14 or European Rugby Champions Cup match there. It occasionally hosts football matches, as well as American football games. Some A-list music acts have performed there too, such as The Rolling Stones, Oasis and The Spice Girls, and no doubt more will grace its stage in the future. If you’re interested in the history of the stadium, why not book a tour?

About Murrayfield Stadium

With its capacity of 67,144, Murrayfield is the largest stadium in Scotland, and the fifth largest in the UK (after Wembley, Twickenham, Old Trafford and Principality Stadium, Cardiff). It plays host to the Scottish Rugby Union national team. In 1975, an incredible 104,000 spectators crammed in for a Five Nations match against Wales, setting its record gate – it remains the largest attendance at a rugby match in the northern hemisphere. It was constructed in the early 1920s and saw its first match against England in 1925. The stadium underwent major development in the early 1990s, and only got floodlights as late as 1994.

Concerts at Murrayfield Stadium

As a venue of multiple uses, Murrayfield Stadium isn’t just a great sporting venue. It has also welcomed several A-list music acts since it first hosted David Bowie in the 80s. Some of the most famous artists to perform concerts at Murrayfield Stadium over the years include the Rolling Stones, Oasis, Madonna, Tina Turner and Robbie Williams, with no doubt that many more will grace its stage in the future.

Getting to concerts at Murrayfield Stadium isn’t the easiest or most convenient. But while Murrayfield is a 30-minute walk from the closest train station at Haymarket, you just can’t beat a good walk with like-minded music fans all excited to see their favourite performer. And likewise, if you’re headed back into Edinburgh after the gig, singing along to fan favourites you’ve just heard with other concertgoers is a feeling like no other!
