What is Hidden Disabilities?

Hidden disabilities is as a subtle way of recognising that someone has a hidden disability and may require some extra help on their travels. It comes in the style of lanyards, wristbands and wallet cards with an easily recognisable sunflower logo.

Living with a hidden disability can make life more demanding for many people. It’s also difficult for others to recognise, acknowledge or understand the challenges faced. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower discreetly indicates to people including staff, colleagues and health professionals that the person wearing it has a hidden disability. Our teams are briefed to be aware that the cardholder may need additional support, help or a little more time because of this.

The voluntary scheme, which was developed at Gatwick Airport in 2016, has been welcomed across the rail industry to help customers feel more comfortable when travelling by train. You’ll find loads more information at our stations, as well as lanyards and wallet cards for customers who may benefit from the scheme.

Brandon Peat, our Accessibility and Inclusion Manager, said: “As more passengers start travelling again, we are striving to make the railway more inclusive. We are incredibly proud to be part of the Sunflower Scheme, giving passengers with hidden disabilities greater confidence to travel on Avanti West Coast.”

If you think you or someone you know would benefit from the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme, products and more information can be found by visiting their website.
