Poulton-le-Fylde is a small town outside Blackpool, but at the start of the 19th century it was a major hub, the biggest settlement for miles around. As well as being a market town for all the local farms, its location next to the River Wyre made it an important transatlantic and Baltic port, and that’s how the town grew. In fact, the railway made it to Poulton in 1840 on its way up to Fleetwood, and it didn’t branch off to Blackpool until 1846, when the town was starting to become a tourist resort. The ports are no longer active trading centres, but they’re perfect for pleasure craft like yachts, and there are plenty of them around here.
Modern Poulton-le-Fylde remains home to about 18,000 people, and has a relaxed vibe about it. There’s the definite sense of fresh sea air that inspires the whole area, and with golf courses and holiday homes in all directions, life happens at a leisurely pace around here. The draw of Blackpool, Lytham St Annes or the beautiful Morecambe Bay are perfect for days and nights out for different types of people, but there’s a homely feel about the town that means you don’t have to leave it to find a welcoming pub and a great meal. So if you’re looking for train tickets to Poulton-le-Fylde, here’s everything you need to know.
If you’re staying at Poulton, it’s always worth keeping in touch with what’s going on by bookmarking the Visit Poulton-le-Fylde website, which is kept up to date with local events, from performances to farmers’ markets. You can find out about the local parks and recreation, as well as what’s happening with the Poulton and Wyre Railway Society, which is working to re-open the line between Poulton and Fleetwood that was closed in 1970.
The main attraction in the immediate area is of course Blackpool. Home to a tower, plenty of thrill rides, vivacious nightlife, miles of golden sands and the occasional episode of Strictly Come Dancing, you probably already know if this sounds like your perfect day out. Poulton is a pleasant place to stay in a hotel or B&B on your trip, as it’s always going to be quieter than the resort itself. It’s also a perfect base camp for heading north to Morecambe and its famous bay, and the historic town of Lancaster is just a short journey away by train or car.
